vaquita

Description
This painting from The Fading Broadcast series vaquita, one of the world’s most critically endangered marine mammals, only very few left, is depicted leaping from a water-filled gramophone an urgent attempt to be heard before it is too late. The vaquita is the rarest marine mammal on Earth, with fewer than 20 individuals estimated to remain in the northern part of the Sea of Cortez. Once a device meant to amplify voices, the gramophone now overflows with water, merging ocean and object into a symbol of desperation and delay. Vintage marine and communication instruments rest nearby, echoing outdated systems of listening and the slow human response to ecological crises. The vaquita’s suspended motion captures a fragile moment between survival and extinction, reminding us that these calls for help often fade into silence before action is taken.
